Duration

13' 30" / 12 pages

Description

The suite is suitable for both church and recital use. The first three movements are primarily lyrical or reflective, while the concluding movement, IV. Brilliant, but awkward, is an ebullient, virtuosic fugue.

Commission

Lee Riccardi, "in memory of Peter J. Daley, III (1961–1995)"

First performance

1995 St. Paul's Church, Brookline MA / Thomas Handel, organist

…There are four movements, the last one of which sounds on paper like the odd man out (Prelude and Fugue, "Tu es Petrus"; Chaconne; Elegy; Brilliant, but awkward.) The piece is an in memoriam and so has a pronounced serious bent. The escond movement, the Chaconne, uses piquant harmonies in a floating, upper register to fine effect. Although each movement is only three minutes long, the suite packs an emotional punch way above its weight, to the extent that the final climax is really quite shattering.
